What Are the Advantages of Advertising in Classifieds?

Many newspapers in the past were picked up for the sole purpose of combing the classified ads section. With the advent of the Internet, that practice has largely subsided as online advertising has taken the place of print. No matter the form, classified advertising continues to be a desirable way of doing business.

Classified ads can be effective in a variety of mediums. They are identified by lines of text that are usually placed in a specific category in a printed medium or in listings or search results online. Although they usually appear in classified sections or listings in magazines, newspapers, newsletters or websites, they can also be presented as display ads within those sections or listings. Classified display ads are larger than regular classified ads and include graphic elements. Online classifieds might even include multimedia tools such as maps or videos.

Easy to Write

Classified ads, because of their short, simple, to-the-point nature, are the easiest type of copy to write. Only the most basic facts or details are necessary in as brief a description as possible, which means it is not necessary to hire copywriters in order to produce them. Classified ads can also be written without having to keep graphic design elements in mind, except for making sure there’s enough white space around the words in print ads to draw attention.

Classified ads are generally the most inexpensive way a company can advertise. The shorter the ad, the cheaper it usually is. Compared to television advertising, for example, classified advertising is more cost effective by a wide margin. The setup cost alone for national TV advertising is $50,000 to $750,000, according to Internet marketing company WebpageFX, while setup cost for either national magazine or newspaper classified advertising is only $1,500 to $20,000. WebpageFX claims that classified advertising on the Web is the cheapest and easiest way to bring in new business, with setup costs for national search engine optimization, pay-per-click marketing and email marketing at only $4,000 to $10,000. Companies placing job ads online might only pay $75 for a 30-day ad, such as on Geebo.com, which partners its ads with other job search sites. Advertising for nearly every category under the sun — including jobs, items for sale, and services — can also be done in most cases for very low cost or free on Craigslist.org. For example, job-offer ads for most areas are free; for some cities the cost is $25.

Wide Reach

Demographically, classified ads are capable of reaching many types of customers far and wide. For example, classifieds that advertise jobs on job search websites like Careerbuilder.com or SimplyHired.com can reach any number and type of person hunting for a job. Likewise, classifieds in a local newspaper section can be seen by anyone picking up the paper. Entrepreneur magazine says that brief classified ads are most effective when offering a commonly sold product or service.
